The Composites R&D Engineer is responsible for new product development involving feasibility trade studies, supporting composite product design, development of cost-competitive manufacturing plans & processes, conducting manufacturing trials for ensuring part producibility as well as demonstrating final part performance which meets customer requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform research & development of innovative next-gen composite processes and products for the manufacture of fiber-reinforced thermoplastic components/structures involving various thermoplastic forming, molding, overmolding and fusion bonding processes
Develop detailed layouts of proposed manufacturing processes for new processes and products to meet specialized design and performance requirements
Perform feasibility assessments, trade studies and cost-benefit analysis to evaluate new manufacturing concepts and processes
Develop/evaluate various tools and equipment for proposed next-gen manufacturing concepts and methods
Conduct manufacturing trials to identify key process parameters for new processes and to optimize/stabilize existing processes in order to achieve successful part producibility
Perform various tests to demonstrate and certify new products meet customer’s requirements
Develop and maintain Engineering’s composite materials, process specifications, standards and equipment operating procedures
Assist Production personnel during the launch of new and revised processes including training production team members, providing technical assistance as needed and supporting continuous process improvements
Represent Engineering on cross-functional teams involving new product development, design, fabrication and/or testing activities
Ability to perform detailed problem analysis, problem resolution and support Quality improvement initiatives.
Organize and manage product development from conception through the various stages of technology readiness to full maturity
Education and Experience
B.S. degree in Chemical, Mechanical, Plastics & Composites Engineering or Engineering Technology required
CAD modeling and analysis (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, ProE or similar) preferred
Familiarity with statistical and lean manufacturing methods (Statistical Process Control, Design of Experiments, Six Sigma, Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing)
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
